The United Kingdom is on edge as the global Monkeypox crisis looms closer to home, sending a ripple of concern through the country. The World Health Organisation has issued a warning after the virus made its way to Europe, causing a heightened sense of urgency among health officials.
Recently, Sweden reported the first case of Clade 1 Monkeypox outside of Africa, where it has already claimed the lives of over 500 people. This ominous news has prompted authorities in the UK to gear up for a potential outbreak within their borders.
Dr. Meera Chand, a deputy director at UKHSA, revealed, “The risk to the UK population is currently considered low. Nevertheless, plans are in motion to prepare for any cases that we might see in the UK.”
The spread of this new strain of Monkeypox has sparked fear due to its ability to transmit through close contact with both animals and humans. Symptoms of the virus include fever, chills, headache, exhaustion, swollen lymph nodes, muscle pain, and skin rash.
Previously, cases of Monkeypox in the UK were linked to travel to and from countries in west or central Africa, where the virus is endemic. However, a concerning shift occurred in May 2022, when sustained transmission of the virus was identified, resulting in a significant outbreak primarily affecting gay or bisexual men.
In response, a vaccination program was swiftly implemented in the summer of 2022, ending in July 2023. Despite efforts to contain the virus, there is no direct cure for Monkeypox. Treatment focuses on managing its symptoms and providing relief, such as clearing up the rash and alleviating pain.
The highly contagious nature of Monkeypox makes it easily transmissible through physical contact, including kissing or sexual activity. Moreover, the virus can be contracted from animals, contaminated materials, and even from infected pregnant women to their unborn babies.
As the UK braces itself for the potential arrival of Monkeypox, health officials are emphasizing the importance of vigilance and preparedness. Plans are being put in place to ensure that medical professionals are equipped to promptly identify and respond to any suspected cases. Moreover, protocols for safe clinical care and the prevention of further transmission are being developed to safeguard the population.
