A musical wunderkind from Minehead, Anthony Knight has accomplished something truly remarkable. At just 18 years old, he has managed to raise an impressive £12,000 to support disadvantaged children worldwide, and he’s not planning on slowing down any time soon.
Embarking on a mission as ambitious as it is altruistic, Mr. Knight spent 12 months traveling to 12 different countries, wielding his violin as a weapon for good. His philanthropic journey covered approximately 13,500 miles and took him to the enchanting streets of European cities such as Vienna, Riga, Paris, and Bern. There, he weaved melodies so mesmerizing, they moved people to open their hearts and pocketbooks.
This is only the start for the talented musician. With a new goal of £20,000 in his sights, Mr. Knight is already preparing for his next grand venture – performing in 20 cathedrals across Europe in the coming year.
This adventure isn’t his first venture into using his music to make the world a better place. In the past, he raised funds for the Ukraine Appeal by performing in various churches across Somerset. However, feeling the calling to make a more global impact, he set off on his European tour in August 2023, managing to balance his travels with his A-level studies during school holidays.
During his travels, Mr. Knight lodged in hotels and enchanted public spaces with his performances, including the lobbies of some rather “posh” establishments. The kindness and support he received from the people he met along the way buoyed his spirits and fueled his passion.
Of all the stops on his journey, Vienna held a special place in his heart. The city, with its profound connection to classical music, filled him with inspiration as he walked in the footsteps of two of his favorite composers – Beethoven and Mozart, both buried there. “To walk in their footsteps was inspiring,” he said.
Throughout his musical journey, his parents, Paul and Solveiga, were by his side, marveling at their son’s uncanny ability to convey emotions through his music. His performances often left his mother, Solveiga, feeling “emotional” as well. “How he conveys his emotions through his pieces… When I see other people being touched, that makes me emotional as well,” she said. “I’m always emotional actually, when he puts in a lot of work and emotions and that comes across when he performs.”
In Switzerland’s Bern Minster, Mr. Knight fell in love with the incredible acoustics and atmosphere, sparking a newfound passion for performing in cathedrals. This experience has inspired him to pursue cathedrals as the backdrop for his musical endeavors in the year ahead, as he continues his mission to bring joy and hope to those in need.
Anthony Knight’s story is a testament to the potency of determination, passion, and the universal language of music. Through his heartfelt performances, he has touched the lives of many and made a real impact in the world. As he carries on with his musical crusade, one thing is certain – the world hasn’t heard the last of Anthony Knight and his beloved violin.
