In a twist that no one saw coming, video game sales in Europe experienced an unexpected surge in July, defying expectations with a remarkable increase despite the absence of major game launches during the summer. It seems that gamers across the continent decided to delve into the nostalgia of old favorites, contributing to a collective uptick in video game purchases.
A staggering 2.4 million video games flew off the shelves in Europe in July, marking a noteworthy 3.4% rise from the previous year. This accomplishment becomes even more striking when considering that most of the top-selling games were not even fresh releases. The lone exception to this trend was the arrival of Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, which managed to secure the 9th spot in the charts. Surprisingly, the top-selling game of the month turned out to be the classic EA Sports FC 24, proving that timeless favorites continue to reign supreme.
The remarkable increase in sales can be largely attributed to the fervor of the European Championships that took place in July. With international football fever at its zenith, it’s no wonder that EA Sports FC 24 observed a staggering 69% surge in sales compared to the previous year. The buzz surrounding the football tournament undoubtedly contributed to a significant boost in the gaming industry.
One of the most surprising revelations in the charts was the resurgence of an older game, Hitman Absolution, originally released in 2012. Thanks to a clever and enticing free game promotion on Amazon Prime, the title astonishingly climbed its way to the 8th spot in the rankings. This unexpected turn of events goes to show that strategic marketing tactics can infuse new energy into older games.
While the absence of major game releases remained a prevailing trend, there was one exception – the arrival of EA Sports College Football 25. The game made its debut at a respectable No. 39 in Europe, though it notably found particular success in the UK. Even in the absence of numerous new releases, it’s undeniable that the gaming community was eager to get their hands on whatever they could.
In stark contrast, console sales faced a sharp decline during the same period. A total of 263,000 gaming machines were sold across selected markets, reflecting a concerning 46% decrease from the previous year. Despite this, the PS5 managed to maintain its position as the market leader for July, albeit with a 56% decrease in sales. The ever-popular Nintendo Switch closely followed in second place, yet it also experienced a notable 29% drop. The Xbox Series family of consoles secured the third spot, but it too saw a significant 42% decrease in sales. With the absence of major console game launches, it’s evident that the lack of new releases had a substantial impact on console sales.
In the realm of accessories, a substantial 1.08 million products were sold across selected markets, with the PS5 DualSense controller emerging as the clear front runner. However, accessory sales have experienced a nearly 20% dip compared to the previous year. It’s clear that the market has taken a hit due to the overall decline in console sales.
Despite the challenges faced by the gaming industry, the resilience and adaptability of both game developers and enthusiasts remain evident. As older games continued to captivate the hearts of gamers and new releases found success in unexpected places, the European gaming landscape remains as vibrant and dynamic as ever.
