In a courageous and daring move, Tim Sweeney, the mastermind behind Epic Games, stood firm in the face of Fortnite’s expulsion from Apple and Google’s app stores last August. Despite the staggering loss of an estimated $1 billion, Sweeney adamantly asserts that the cost of freedom is worth every single penny.
Now, with the grand debut of the Epic Game Store on mobile in Europe, Sweeney proudly upholds his company’s groundbreaking decision, which sparked intense legal showdowns between Epic Games and the tech titans. As a result, the company has expanded its influence to the Android market worldwide and the iPhone market in mainland Europe, in compliance with the policy alterations mandated by the EU.
The launch of the Epic Game Store on smartphones showcases beloved games like Fortnite, Rocket League Sideswipe, and Fall Guys. Moreover, the store is poised to allure other non-Epic Games titles later this year, with the ambitious aim of racking up 100 million new installations across Android and iOS by year’s end.
Nevertheless, Sweeney and his team are not entirely content, particularly due to the cumbersome process of installing the alternative storefront on iPhones, which entails 15 convoluted steps. They have also voiced their dissatisfaction with Apple’s exorbitant fees and taxes for developers seeking to release apps on the Epic Game Store, decrying them as “hot garbage.”
Despite these obstacles, Epic Games remains fiercely resolved to carve out a path for itself in the mobile market, with Sweeney denouncing Apple’s “deceptive and malevolent” conduct, emphasizing the necessity to strip away the arbitrary power that Apple wields over its platform.
Amidst this clash, more mobile storefronts are emerging, with Microsoft currently in the works on its own store for smartphones. Whether Fortnite will find its footing on this platform remains to be seen, pending the disclosure of Microsoft’s terms for developers.
Sweeney remains unwavering, proclaiming, “Our benchmark is – promising terms for all developers. If they’re promising, we’ll come. If they’re not promising, we won’t come.”
Epic Games’ audacious defiance against Apple and Google’s app store policies has become a resounding call for fair and open competition in the digital marketplace. The company’s struggle and determination embody a pivotal moment in the battle for a more level playing field for all developers, and their relentless efforts continue to forge a path towards a more equitable landscape in the realm of software distribution and payment processing.
