“Texas Sports Legends: Celebrating the Class of 2024”

Prepare for an extraordinary evening as the Texas Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame prepares to celebrate its largest inductee class ever. The 66th annual ceremonies are set for June 9 at the Amarillo Civic Center’s Grand Plaza.

Six exceptional athletes and coaches will be honored, along with outstanding athletes and coaches of the year from 2023-2024 in 11 sports, as well as five special award winners. This year’s class of inductees is teeming with legendary talent, each with their own compelling tale of perseverance, determination, and remarkable athletic triumph.

First up is Laura Switzer, a McLean native renowned for her remarkable basketball career with the Flying Queens of Wayland Baptist in the early 1960s. She etched her name in history by helping lead the Queens to a national championship and two runner-up titles, earning a reputation as a clutch player and an exceptional free-throw shooter.

Then there’s Don Rives, a Wheeler native who made his mark on college football at Texas Tech University. Achieving All-American status is no small feat, and Rives certainly left his mark. His time with the Chicago Bears in the NFL further solidified his status as a dominating force on the field.

Next, we have Tom Doughtie, a golf virtuoso who reigned supreme in the competitive golf world for nearly 30 years after relocating to Amarillo. Scooping up major tournaments and multiple titles, Doughtie’s skill and sportsmanship have made a lasting impact on the golfing realm.

Sheryl Estes, a standout in both track and basketball, showcased her versatility as an athlete. Her coaching career cemented her position as a leader and pioneer in women’s sports.

Zach Thomas, a White Deer native, defied the odds to become a college football sensation at Texas Tech, and eventually a household name in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins. Thomas’ numerous Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections speak volumes about his illustrious career.

Lastly, Leslie Broadhurst created waves as the only head boys basketball coach in the history of Randall High School, racking up an incredible 703 career wins and leading his team to multiple championships and tournaments.

It’s not just about the athletes, though. Coaches and athletes from various sports will be acknowledged for their exceptional achievements throughout the year, showcasing the vast array of talent in the Texas Panhandle area.

With special awards that recognize individuals who have gone above and beyond in their respective fields, the event is set to be a night of celebration, gratitude, and inspiration.
