Cornwall’s female rugby team is on the verge of something truly historic as they gear up for the County Championship semi-final in Durham, with their sights set on reaching the final at Twickenham. The Black and Gold women have been on an impressive winning streak, triumphing in two out of three pool games, including a resounding 86-0 victory against Somerset.
This could be a defining moment for the team, as they have risen through the ranks, competing in the second tier of the Gill Burns Cup since their triumphant ascent from the third division in 2022. Head coach Jo Holden can barely contain her excitement, exclaiming, “We’ve never made it to a final in Division Two, so we’re eagerly anticipating that next stage. When I tell the girls that they’ll be playing at Twickenham, on that beautiful, green grass of home, I can’t think of a better source of motivation for them.”
The team’s camaraderie and resilience have been integral to their journey to the semi-finals. Winger Joey Sandercock spoke of the team’s growth, saying, “This season has been truly special – we’ve grown so close as a team. The away games have really brought us together; we’ve forged strong bonds off the field and gotten to know each other on a deeper level.”
The unwavering support and unity within the team have played a pivotal role in propelling their success. Sandercock emphasized, “The backing from every single person – whether it’s the spectators on the sidelines or the teammates on the field – to work together and understand that everyone is in it for each other, not just themselves, is a truly extraordinary experience to be a part of.”
The excitement and anticipation for the impending semi-final are palpable, with the team wholly focused on the challenge ahead. As they continue to prepare for the big day, the prospect of playing at Twickenham is both electrifying and profoundly motivating for the entire team.
The journey of Cornwall’s women’s rugby team is a testament to their unwavering dedication, exceptional teamwork, and unbreakable spirit. With their eyes firmly set on Twickenham, the Black and Gold women are poised to make a lasting impression in the County Championship and announce their presence on the grandest stage of all.
